Organisation Profile

Czech Environmental Information Agency (CENIA) is a contributory organization of the Ministry of the Environment of the Czech Republic, providing professional, information, data, and technological support for the performance of public administration in the field of environmental protection. Through the operation of information systems, processing of environmental data, analytical activities, and expert advisory services, CENIA creates the information infrastructure necessary for public sector decision-making, the implementation of environmental policies, and the fulfilment of national and European obligations of the Czech Republic.

CENIA has been systematically developed as the central data and information authority of the environmental sector. Its mission is to ensure the availability of reliable, verified, and interconnected environmental data, to develop modern public administration information infrastructure, and to provide expert services supporting the effective performance of public administration. The organization integrates expertise in environmental protection, information technologies, geoinformatics, and data analytics, creating an environment that enables the use of data as a foundation for informed and evidence-based decision-making.

An important part of CENIA’s role is the development and operation of digital public services. The organization operates information systems supporting the fulfilment of legal obligations, electronic communication between public authorities, businesses, and citizens, as well as data sharing among public administration bodies. At the same time, it creates conditions for the development of open data, interoperability of information systems, standardization of data processes, and secure information management in accordance with the principles of modern eGovernment.

In addition to its technological role, CENIA also performs important professional and analytical functions. It prepares supporting materials for the strategic decision-making of the Ministry of the Environment, contributes to the assessment of the state and development of the environment, develops expert studies, methodologies, and analytical outputs, and coordinates the fulfilment of numerous national and European reporting obligations. Thanks to its long-established professional expertise, CENIA represents an important partner in the development of evidence-based public policies.

International cooperation constitutes an integral part of the organization’s activities. CENIA coordinates the implementation of the INSPIRE Directive in the Czech Republic and contributes to the development of the European spatial data infrastructure. Through these activities, it ensures the compatibility of Czech environmental data with European standards and supports their effective use at both national and international levels.

CENIA also creates and manages a centralized centre of expertise for information technology, cybersecurity, enterprise architecture, project management, and the digitalization of public administration within the Ministry of the Environment sector. In doing so, it responds to the growing demands for the secure and efficient operation of public administration information systems while further strengthening its position as a professional and technological partner of the Ministry’s sector.

The organization’s long-term vision is to develop modern data and information services that will enable more effective environmental management, support the digital transformation of public administration, and contribute to evidence-based decision-making founded on high-quality, verified, and easily accessible data.
